Ruth is a set and costume designer for theatre, opera and dance. She trained at the Motley Theatre Design Course and is based in South London.

A strong connection to and love of music, has led Ruth to designing many operas and music productions nationally (recently at the Barbican and Longborough Festival Opera) and internationally (Bregenz and Spoleto Festivals, Abu Dhabi National Theatre, Hollywood Bowl LA, Princeton and MIT universities). She also enjoys collaborations with orchestras including the City of London Sinfonia, The Academy of Ancient Music and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment.
Ruth has enjoyed long term relationships with several companies and directors including George Peck at the Oxford School of Drama, the Learning Department at the Royal Opera House, Tim Yealland at English Touring Opera and directors Hazel Gould, Freya Wynn- Jones, Thomas Guthrie and Karen Gillingham. She is an associate artist at Blind Summit where she has been part of the company under director Mark Down since 2014.

Her work with Blind Summit designing and making puppets has led to a particular interest in how puppets and music can work together. Further experiments in this have resulted in projects with English Touring Opera, the Barbican, Princeton University, Barokksolistenein (Norway), Longborough Opera and at LSO St Lukes with I Fagiolini.

Engagement, outreach and teaching forms part of Ruth’s practice and she is a lead artist for the Learning and Participation departments at Garsington Opera, English National Opera and the Royal Opera House where she also works on the annual Design Challenge. Ruth has designed many large scale community operas for ROH, Opera North, ENO and Garsington.

Ruth holds a Lectureship in Design for Theatre and Screen for University for the Creative Arts.
